Dear Batchmates,
FAREWELL TO OUR SEC 4 SENIORS
Today was our Sec 4's farewell.
If you remembered, an hour before the start of Band session, all of us (save the Basses) gathered in one of the shared classrooms in J2 to prepare for our Batch Farewell Item for the Sec 4s. We were making sock puppets and rushing presents for our respective section Sec 4s. Because of that, our whole batch was late for attendance-taking. I found that really amusing. Yet scary at the same time. I wonder what our seniors were thinking when none of us turned up for attendance-taking. (I wonder what the person taking the Sec 1s' attendance was feeling!)
We were rather dismayed that we were not given an hour to prepare for our Farewell item as we were not really ready yet and we did not practice at all. On the schedule, it mentioned that there was 1h of Batch Prac but I thought it was only for the Main Band so the Sec 1s get to do whatever we want. It wasn't. Batch Prac was for the Main Band to play the pieces that they once played and the Sec 1 just sit there and listen. I was kind of freaking out because we did not have time to practice our item but overall, I think it was worth it sitting there and listening to our seniors sight-read the scores and screwing up.
After Batch Prac it was Section Farewell. We broke up into sections and went to our respective venues to wish our section Sec 4s goodbye. The Sec 4s in the clarinet section were: Yi Wye (section leader), Josephine (she's the sister of one of my direct!) and Tian Yu. We exchanged presents. The Sec 1, Sec 2 and Sec 3 gave the Sec 4 presents and the Sec 4s gave their section batchmates, Sec 3s, Sec 2s and Sec 1 presents (but us sec 1s received less presents because they don't really know us). I feel that out of all the presents the Sec 4s received, the Sec 1s' presents to them were the most 随便 which makes me feel very bad.
After Section Farewell, we headed to the AVA Room for the Farewell items. The Sec 1s went first. What we did was: every section went out one by one and made the sock puppets that they made (each sock puppet represents each of their senior) sing a short song about their seniors (to the tune of "This Old Man"). We spent a lot of time getting ready and I think the performance could have been a lot better (if only we had time to practice). But at least the seniors found our performance cute and funny. The plan was to give a thank you speech after the whole song and then present the sock puppets to the respective seniors but we missed out the sock puppets giving part. Which I find kind of sad. But I gave the puppet me and Sarah made to the senior the puppet represents, Tian Yu.
Comparing our Farewell Item to the other batches', I find our item to be rather fail and last-minute. Never mind next year we can do a better one for our directs! We must, we can and we will!
After every batch's Farewell Item, the EXCO 2011 result was released. And the results for the three most important people are:
Student Conductor: Hui Jun! (Trombone)
Drum Major: Yi Xian! (Double Bass)
Band Major: Vivian! (Saxophone)
Don't you find it amusing that this year's Drum Major is Yixian and next year's Drum Major is Yi Xian? My direct, Ying Qin also has a lot of EXCO positions: Eflat Clarinet Soloist, Section Leader, Treasurer. Congratulations to all the respective seniors!
Then, we went back to the Band Room and took our dismissal. The last time Batch X will be taking the dismissal with us.
Anyways, I want to thank all the people who contributed to the Farewell Item, which is actually everyone. Thank you for going out there and performing for the Sec 4s! Special thanks goes out to Jia Min for coming up with the idea of the sock puppet show and helping to inform everyone about it. And thank you too Xin Ying for providing the materials and helping a lot of people with their sock puppets.
Sorry if you found me being irritating, annoying, naggy and selfish before, during and after the Farewell Item. I was kind of freaking out over it. I didn't want our performance to turn out screwed since it was for our seniors. I'm really sorry.
I really love you all, Batch XIII.
Yours sincerely,
Jenny Tsai
